Brasby Wins Nuyorican Poet's Cafe Beat Battle
FCR: How did you get in this thing?
Braz: My friend Lowkey told me about this beat battle he knew about. He gave me the contact info. I called Rocky who hosts it and he put me in.
FCR: Tell us about how it works.
Braz: I show up with Lowkey's MPC. He lived around the corner so I just brought his instead of mine all the way from Brooklyn. They set us up on stage and there were 8 of us. We battled one on one with someone on the other end of the stage and the crowd cheered for a winner.
FCR: What gave you the edge to win it?
Braz: I brought good beats but some of the guys were kind of wack. One guy brought his whole desktop computer. He brought the big heavy monitor and all, then he was bonked out in the first round. I was a little worried that might happen to me. Each contestant had two minutes a round to do whatever they wanted. Plus I had drank a bunch of wines at the bar before hand so I was acting kind of silly and dancing around on stage and just having fun. I think people liked that.
FCR: Tell me more about that.
Braz: Well there was a long wait from when I did sound check till the time I played, so I was sitting at the bar and the bartender just kept topping off my glass. And Lowkey was like, "Oh no...he's gunna get angry....stop him off that wine." But I didn't get short tempered, I got funny and the host was busting my chops about my hairline but he wouldn't take his little Kangol hat off. I suspected something there.
FCR: Who was the host?
Braz: This radio host named Jer2. It was all good. He's a nice guy. It was just funny and the crowd liked us busting chops. And they liked the beats so I guess thats how I took it. |
